7 San Antonio Running Clubs To Know

San Antonio is one of the top 10 U.S. cities by population and thus has a growing list of local running groups that service locals and tourists alike.  We receive quite a few calls per week asking for our recommendations on the best places and groups to run with.  Below is a list of local running clubs and typical run locations to help you find the best one for you.

Many of these run groups not only offer free social run but also offer training programs for local 5k, 10k, half marathons and marathons.

Alamo 180

Alamo 180 offers a seasonal run group that trains for the San Antonio  Rock'n'Roll 10k and 13.1. Included in the membership is the opportunity to add strength training (a great compliment to running). Run meet-ups are:

  • Wednesdays at 6:30pm at Edison Track
  • Saturdays at 7am at alternating locations.

Downtown Run Group

DRG meets on Saturday at 6 am or 7 am and Tuesday at 6 pm at the Pearl Brewery Amphitheater near the Hotel Emma.
DRG's mission statement is to provide structure and community for people of all ages and experience levels to prepare for specific running/walking events or to achieve the goal of living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  Individuals who join can expect to be inspired, encouraged, and supported as they participate in DRG’s FREE weekly activities. If you are interested in running with a group at the Pearl Brewery this is a great choice.

There is also a Meetup called R-U-N that does weekday runs. I attend one on Wednesday nights that is a 4-mile social run on the Riverwalk by the Pearl. There are also a couple other regular runs posted on the Meetup page, but unsure which ones are active.

I totally concur with recommending IAAP. It has the best, most supportive leaders in Minnie and Jose. A big problem with some running groups is that they are cliquish or focused on supporting just the strongest runners. I have run with IAAP for more than four years, and they encourage beginners, but also really push those who want to improve their times. Join us on Mondays, Wednesday at 7 PM at Brackenridge HS. track – totally worth the drive downtown. Sunday long runs have great support – but vary in location. Check out IAAP on their website, iaapweb.com

IAAP is hands down the best running group! Coach Jose, a former marathon record holder, is so knowledgeable about running and every practice he glady passes on his wisdom. This group is full of genuine people who care about your personal goals and encourages you to reach them. I am very proud to run with this group, I mean family!!

You need to add Iaap training team to your list. This one is always pushed to the back and you know it has always done great things for the running community

Running the Iconic Powerlines

The Powerlines is not a city park or a managed trail.  It is simply a "trail" running under powerlines that was discovered by local Rockhoppers and has since become one of the local favorites for anyone looking to get some elevation and trail miles.

Part of the beauty of the Powerlines is its simplicity.  It is a 3 mile out and back course. Nothing fancy. Simply rugged running.

Friedrich is a great local trail that is located within a 20-30 minute drive from anywhere in San Antonio.  With the varied terrain and trail options, it is a great place for a weekly training run or to build long run mileage on prototypical Texas Hill Country terrain.  There are a couple of spots where the trail running can get technical but overall, Friedrich is a great place to run for trail runners and hikers of all levels.
